What Earth Hour Looks Like When It’s Close to Home

Led by the Makati Climate Change Committee, the initiative brings together communities and organizations across the city to take part in the annual switch-off activity.

This year’s Earth Hour Makati brought together residents, businesses, and the local government in a coordinated citywide participation.

In Makati, SMDC developments Air, Lush, Jazz, and Red Residences, all under its Heights segment, took part in the lights-off activity alongside the wider community.

The act itself is simple. What it points to is more relevant.

For many residents, sustainability is no longer defined by one-off events. It is shaped by how daily life is designed to use less.

In communities where workplaces, transport, and essential services are within reach, people spend less time on the road and rely less on daily travel. Over time, this reduces energy use tied to everyday movement.

Building design also plays a role. How lighting is used, how shared spaces operate, and how residents move through a property all affect how energy is consumed across a community.

These are small, practical shifts. But across an entire development, they add up.

Beyond the one-hour switch-off, Earth Hour highlights how everyday environments shape how people consume energy.

As Makati continues to lead climate initiatives, participation from residential communities shows how these efforts extend beyond public spaces and into everyday living.

For SMDC, participation in Earth Hour reflects a broader focus on building communities where everyday living is more efficient and more connected.
